Bigger than Expected in 7x7 Magazine

7x7 asked me to photograph this Hermes scarf, flat, for an upcoming Radar feature. I photographed it flat. And then I photographed it some more.

I'm quite glad they selected one of the floating scarves over the flat one. It was nice to see the entirety of the scarf design, but the floating one ends up being much more interesting.

In 7x7 Magazine now.

Mucking About with Precious Objects

I suppose it's a reliable question: put expensive things with cheap things, or put expensive things with expensive things? Contrast or complement? Tension or calm? It's not like you have to commit to one path or another for a lifetime, but within one photograph, you do. 30" Pearl

The Sea Life of Jewelry

I tested some jewelry from Stuart Moore recently - Corian rings with diamonds. I really like their modern designs, and their gallery is the Apple Store of jewelry. They're super nice and so I decided...octopus.

It turns out the octopus I shot for my portfolio was huge - the ones I was finding for this shoot were a quarter or an eighth the size of that one. My original plan was to build a kind of landscape with the octopus arms, and nestle the rings in it, but since I couldn't find a large enough octopus, I did this. I actually like this better, because the spirals formed by the arms are really nice.

The the array of gems on the white ring is what triggered the octopus idea.

New Jewelry Tests

Moving on from jewelry on white. Good to work with some big, bright, colored stones, and a matte finish. Plus I hauled out the ol' butterflies. Still looking for my sweet spot between interior gleam, surface reflection, not to mention which facets to call out. Could spend all day on such things.
